THE VENUE – REYKJADALUR GEOTHERMAL VALLEY, NEAR HVERAGERDI
From Reykjavik, you'll travel east by coach or mini-van over the Hellisheidi Plateau. Just before the road drops down to the plain, Hveragerdi comes into view – you can't miss the columns of steam rising from the hillside. Sited 40km east of Reykjavik, the town is famous for its greenhouses heated by geothermal water, where cut flowers, house plants and vegetables are grown.
The locals are used to the hot springs bubbling away in their back yard as the village lies in an active volcanic zone. But when an earthquake hit the region a few years back, even they were surprised when a whole new batch of geothermal pools popped up all over the place. The most beautiful of them can be found in Reykjadalur, meaning 'Valley of Steam' lying between the town and Mt Hengill, the volcano at the heart of this active region.

THE HOT SPRING HIKE
After a safety briefing with your guide, it's time to set off on this exciting 3-hour hike. The trail starts with a short but sharp haul up a slope, as the first geothermal springs come into view. With the main ascent out the way, the valley opens up ahead and it's an impressive sight. Though it's always nice when the sun shines, Reykjadalur is almost more atmospheric in the mist with its amazing variety of springs. There are smalll gurgling pots and vibrant super-heated pools, some bursting with energy and belching out steam, others quietly sizzling.
Pouring down the valley side, the hot water drains into a small stream, where you can strip off and relax in a natural hot bath. After a packed lunch and time to explore the area, you'll hike back down into the town of Hveragerði. This is a great half-day guided walk that everyone can enjoy.
