Click here for SUMMER VERSION Experience a glacier up close and feel the ice all around you? Head for adventure and join an exciting guided glacier excursion on Solheimajokull, one of the most impressive glaciers in Iceland. This is ice hiking with a difference, exploring an amazing frozen world of crevasses and sink holes, jagged ridges and ice walls that is accessible to anyone with a sense of adventure. You don't need any previous experience of glacier walking and all the necessary gear is provided for a safe yet thrilling glacier hike.
THE VENUE – SOLHEIMAJOKULL GLACIER, SOUTH ICELAND This 5 mile long glacier spills off the much larger Myrdalsjokull icecap, one of Iceland's big four. It's located a scenic two-hour drive east of Reykjavik, near the beautiful waterfall Skogafoss, which you'll visit on your return journey to Reykjavik at the end of the days.
THE EXPERIENCE – GLACIER HIKING AND ICE CLIMBING Once you arrive at the snout of the glacier, the guide will do a briefing and go through the equipment and safety procedures. Then, kitted out with crampons, ice axe and safety lines you'll set off onto the ice with your guide. Just imagine standing on ice that's many hundreds of years old and hundreds of feet thick below you. Peering into a crevasse or sink hole you can hear the occasional rumble and trickle of water. That's to remind you that these 'rivers' of ice are alive, melting, moving and changing constantly yet imperceptibly. As you explore the eerie frozen labyrinth, there'll be the chance to try your hand at ice climbing on one of the ice walls – entirely optional but great fun. A packed lunch will be served on the glacier.
