Trip level: 2 (out of 5) easy
Departures: from Reykjavik harbour at 09:00, daily 15 April-01 October
Duration: 10-11 hours
Search for whales along the coast of Iceland then enjoy the thrills of whitewater rafting on a journey down the Hvita River – nature and action combine on this fun-filled day excursion from Reykjavik.
THE WHALE WATCHING
The day starts with a whale watching cruise on Faxafloi Bay, just off Reykjavik, in search of whales and dolphins. Most commonly seen are minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and the popular humpback whales. From time to time fin whales, sei whales, orcas and others show up. This is nature, so it's a matter of luck too, but once out at sea you'll be scanning the horizon for a tell-tale blow. Meanwhile, gannets, guillemots, cormorants, kittiwakes, arctic terns and many other seabirds are a constant distraction as they hunt for fish. During the three-hour cruise you'll be served a light lunch and sail past islands inhabited by colonies of puffin – a great photo opportunity!
RAFTING ON THE HVITA
Back in port, you will be picked up at 12:15 and driven to Drumbó Basecamp on the banks of the Hvítá River. There you'll get kitted out for an afternoon of whitewater rafting. After a safety briefing and practice session it's paddles to the water as you head for the rapids. This exhilarating 7 km ride through the Hvita Gorge is a fun-filled mix of whitewater rapids and wavea. But there are quieter stretches, where you can sit back and enjoy the dramatic scenery as you drift by the walls of the gorge. After squeezing through the narrows of Bruarhlod, where the canyon is at its most dramatic, there's the option to do a cliff jump. This is for those who want even more of a challenge! At the end of the rafting there's a welcome hot tub or sauna before the journey back to Reykjavik.
